How to Become a Medical Biller
In today’s increasingly competitive and specialized job market, it can be beneficial to become certified medical biller. The Certified Medical Billing Specialist (CMBS) exam provides a way to grow your income potential while distinguishing yourself in the eyes of employers.
The government does not require that you become certified, but it is a recommended step for your career. Certification proves that you have an advanced proficiency in medical billing and gives you an advantage over your non-certified counterparts.
- Requirements to Take the Certified Medical Billing Specialist (CMBS) Exam
- Enroll in an accredited medical billing program
- Receive an “A” in the program
- Contact the Medical Association of Billers (MAB) to schedule the certification exam approximately 30 days after completion of the medical billing program
- Send (1) a check for $199 to pay for the exam and (2) a letter stating your name and address so you can receive your test results
- Coordinate a proctor for the Certified Medical Billing Specialist (CMBS) examination
- Study for the certification exam using the guidelines and study information provided from MAB.
- Take the CMBS exam
- Submit resume to medical billing company
Medical billing programs may vary, but most consist of the information you will need to know to pass the certification exam; e.g. medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, computers, ethics, and more. Your familiarity with commonly-used medical terms; internal network of a Hospital; ICD-9-CM, CPT and HCPCS codes; and medical billing forms will help you succeed on the exam.
